Learning with Closed Eyes
November 30, 2007 |
Online Educa 2007 - Session 2b - November 29
Speakers; Harold Sturmer, Dr Okke Schluter – Studiengemeinshaft Darmstadt (SGD)
SGD are a private distance learning institute for further education and part of Klett publishers group. They deal with approximately 35-40,000 learners per year with their primary target group being adult learners
Their approach was based on the view that podcasts can represent a personal learning channel, they are highly mobile, and enable a closeness between tutor and learner. However podcasts are a one way process, the medium itself is not interactive and they are not suitable for long sequences.
They have produced two series of podcasts – one mainly as a marketing tools and the other is a free service entitled ‘Develop Podcasts on Your Own’ - www.sdgd.de or www.podster.de
Their recommendations are that podcasts should be no longer than 10/20 minutes, they should use different speakers, and if they use music to be careful not to use too much, to have summary at start, and ensure that a text transcript is also available. They also referenced the Gartner Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies when technologies go through various stages before becoming established – the technology trigger; a peak of inflated expectations, the trough of disillusionment leading to a slope of enlightenments and finally the plateau of productivity
